On Thursday the 13th of February, local residents, artists and art lovers from across the western suburbs of Brisbane gathered to celebrate the official opening of the newly-relocated Art West Community Gallery.
While still located in the Mount Ommaney Shopping Centre precinct, the Gallery has moved from its previous outside location, to now inside the shopping centre at a more easily-accessible location, next to the Big W.
During the official opening, Art West Community Gallery President Stephen Norris paid tribute to Art West founder Colin Williams for his vision and dedication to the establishment of a gallery in the western suburbs.
“In just over two and a half years, we have had over 20,000 visitors, held 19 exhibitions, three Christmas Markets, two Mothers’ Day Markets, and a Portrait Prize competition.
“The presence of an art gallery inside a shopping centre is an exciting innovation, and one that the Mount Ommaney Shopping Centre can be proud of.
“Tribute should also be paid to members of the Art West community art group, for their tireless efforts in running the gallery, and the establishment of this new facility.” Mr Norris said.
Dr Christian Rowan MP, the State Member for Moggill and LNP Shadow Minister for the Arts, congratulated the Art West Community Gallery for its ongoing success in hosting and promoting local art and artists.
“As the local State Member for Moggill and Shadow Minister for the Arts, it was particularly special to be able to join so many and celebrate this wonderful achievement for the western suburbs of Brisbane.
“The Art West Community Gallery truly is a home for fostering local artists and creativity – the special gift awarded to Councillor Matthew Bourke in recognition for his service was in fact made by local Pullenvale resident and ceramic artist, Yvonne Bouwman of Bundaleer Pottery.
“My congratulations again to founder Col Williams, President Stephen Norris, and their entire team on a truly wonderful achievement after years of dedicated hard work. I’d encourage everyone to stop by the gallery next time they’re at the Mount Ommaney Shopping Centre.” Dr Rowan said.
